        It depends.
During my PhD I put on 6-10 small experiments at a time, making small changes to each one, to get the most information on what chemicals to mix, how hot they have to be etc.
Other times I put on only one experiment, as I want to get a lot of information from the process – does the reaction heat up when I add a chemical, do the crystals in the reaction change size/shape …

To explain in food terms (I like food)
Imagine you wanted to make the perfect pizza:
you could make many different LITTLE pizzas that have different toppings and bread bases. You take a bite out each one and pick the one that tastes best.

Then to make a BIG full size pizza, and you would watch it cooking to see when the best time to take it out the oven would be.

Each of us in this zone are doing lot of different experiments at a lots of different Universities and companies across the UK.

For me I run a lot of experiments together so I can get results a lot quicker before someone else finds out what I’m looking for!

We all work at different places. I know where I work, I have about 10 scientists in my lab and I work closely with 2 or 3 of them and we help each other with our work. I also work with scientists in a few other labs in the university, and at several universities around the world.

One of the fun parts of the job is working with other scientists and learning from them. Especially when they work somewhere cool and you get to go visit them for a while.

I work in a laboratory with 5 other people. 3 of the people work on quality control and test samples from production and products that we sell. One is a student placement at university gaining experience. And me and the other scientist work on research to try and improve products and processes.
